First is this a family vacation with young children or a ski or snowboard trip just for adults. If this is a family vacation there are numerous factors to consider: The age of your children, do they need day care or sitters for when you want to go out, do you want to enroll them in ski or snowboard school just to name a few. In terms of day care or sitters always make sure the services you use are insured and the individuals are bonded, ask for numerous references and don’t settle. Ski or board school also demands research, experience of instructors , rope tow or magic carpet , size of classes , cost , location as it relates to where you are skiing or riding or proximity to other skiers or riders.

The ski resort you choose or have chosen ,what is the proximity to the airport do they provide shuttle service or do you need to arrange your own and if so make sure you reserve seats well in advance so you don’t find yourself waiting for hours around the airport. Car rental , are you better off renting a car and what is the parking situation not only at you lodging accommodations but at the ski slope or in town, weather and road conditions as well as the cost comparing the two.

Preparing for altitude, altitude can have a very serious effect and can ruin one’s vacation, My strongest recommendation is to drink as much water as you can 2-3 weeks prior to your trip and during you vacation as well. Ski resorts in Colorado such as Breckenridge , Copper Mountain, Keystone , Vail , Winter park , steamboat , or Aspen can top out at over 9,000 feet and at some locations over 12,000. In most ski towns you can visit a local ski shop or Walmart and buy small cans of oxygen that will really help. Worst case scenario go the ER.  Signs of altitude sickness can range from mild to severe headaches, nausea to throwing up. Always watch your consumption of alcohol.

Packing  for your trip , casual is the operative word , even in the better restaurants, dressy casual works. Staying warm means wearing layers, clothes that wick away moisture , mittens are warmer than gloves and shoe wear that will grip the surface.

Plan your activities in advance, such as snowmobiling, dog sledding , sleigh rides, winter horseback riding , even  zip lining  these activities book up fast. Research the outfitters in advance and if possible make you reservations in advance.

Beating the lift lines, ski or board early, normally the lines get busy late morning and if possible ski or ride on top avoid going down to the base areas . Most important always ski or ride under control know your own ability and don’t let anyone talk you into going above your comfort level.
